Asia Cup 2025: Will Shubman Gill Take Over India’s T20 Captaincy From Suryakumar Yadav?

Reports suggest Indian Test captain Shubman Gill could lead the T20 side in the 2025 Asia Cup, potentially replacing Suryakumar Yadav as selectors consider changes for the tournament’s playing XI.

Asia Cup 2025: Indian Test cricket captain Shubman Gill may soon have a new responsibility on his shoulders. According to media reports, Gill may be given the command of India's T20 International team for the 2025 Asia Cup. The BCCI Senior Selection Committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, may announce the final team on August 19 or 20 after receiving the medical reports of the players at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Suryakumar Likely To Retain Core

According to media reports, current T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has started batting in the nets at the NCA, which is a positive sign of his fitness. A BCCI source quoted PTI as saying, "Abhishek is currently the top T20 batsman in the ICC rankings. Sanju performed brilliantly both with the bat and behind the wicket last season.

Gill's IPL performance was excellent, and his Test form has also been excellent, but fitting everyone in the top order will be a big challenge." Suryakumar is likely to retain the core players under his captaincy, which includes names like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma, and Hardik Pandya.

Gill vs Suryakumar: The battle for captaincy

Shubman Gill recently captained India with a brilliant batting of 754 runs in the Test series against England. However, Gill was the vice-captain under Suryakumar's captaincy in Sri Lanka last year. Now the race for captaincy between the two is at an exciting turn. The question of form and consistency is before the selectors. Gill's recent form has been excellent, but it will be difficult to ignore Suryakumar's experienced captaincy.

Who will do the opening?

In the top order, the place of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Verma, and Hardik Pandya is almost certain. However, it may be difficult for young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan to get a chance. KL Rahul, who is a strong contender in ODIs, does not fit into the T20 middle-order strategy.

Wicketkeeping and finishing bets

Sanju Samson is the first choice as the main wicketkeeper, but there is tough competition between Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel for the second wicketkeeper. Jitesh impressed everyone with his finishing ability in the recent IPL, while Jurel made his place in the last T20 series.

Who will get a chance in bowling?

Jasprit Bumrah will lead India's fast bowling in the Asia Cup. However, he may be rested in the opening Test of the West Indies tour. Arshdeep Singh is confirmed as the second fast bowler, while there is a tough competition between Harshit Rana and Prasidh Krishna for the third spot. Rana's speed and bounce have caught the attention of the selectors, while Prasidh strengthened his claim by taking 25 wickets in the last IPL. Magic of spin Keeping in mind the UAE pitches, the trio of Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav or Varun Chakraborty will take charge of the spin.
