Trump Secretly Switched Planes in Turkey Amid Iranian Missile Threat
US President Donald Trump was facing the threat of an Iranian attack during the NATO summit in Türkiye. After intelligence input, he was secretly evacuated safely by another plane.
New Delhi: A highly confidential security operation related to US President Donald Trump's visit to Türkiye has now come to light. According to reports, during the NATO summit in Ankara in July, US intelligence agencies received a credible threat from Iran or its allies that Trump and his plane would be targeted. After this, Trump was publicly shown boarding a plane, but behind the scenes, his entire travel plan was changed. They were transported via airport catering vehicle to a small military aircraft and flown out of Turkey.
How did information about the threat reach American agencies?
According to the report, American intelligence agencies had received such information from different sources, which the officials considered serious. There were fears that Iran-backed elements might try to target the president's plane with a surface-to-air missile. Information about the threat related to shoulder-fired missiles also came to light around the NATO conference. However, publicly available information does not prove that final plans for the attack were actually ready.
Why did America change the route of Trump's travel?
Trump reached Ankara on July 7 on a new Boeing 747-8 aircraft. This aircraft was given to America by Qatar and was prepared for the use of the president. But at the time of return, Trump suddenly decided to return by the old Air Force One. At that time he publicly linked it to his desire to travel by old plane. Later reports revealed that security concerns were a major reason for this change.
How was the entire secret operation prepared?
The most shocking thing was the way Trump was taken to the plane. According to reports, Trump boarded an old Air Force One in front of the cameras, giving the impression that he had left for Britain on the same plane. After this, he was quietly taken to another part of the airport through a catering vehicle. From there he boarded a US military C-32A aircraft. During this time, many officials and journalists remained in the plane, which was believed to be Trump's real plane.
Did Iran know Trump's location?
Some reports quoting US officials have claimed that the Iranian side was aware of Trump's presence in Ankara and his place of stay. This was the reason why the security officials did not take the danger around them lightly. However, independent verification of such sensitive intelligence is not possible and it is not clear what concrete capabilities or plans Iran had to target Trump.
Has Trump faced assassination attempts before?
Trump has faced assassination attempts before too. In 2024, he was shot at and injured during an election rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. That same year, an armed man was caught near his golf course in Florida. However, no direct link has been established between these events and the alleged Iranian threat facing Turkey.
Was Trump himself aware of this threat?
While leaving Turkey, Trump did not fully accept the questions of threat related to Iran. He did say that the president's life is always in danger and Iran has already talked about targeting him. At that time, as the reason for changing the aircraft, he had given preference to travelling by the old Air Force One. Later reports painted a very different picture of the security concerns behind this decision.
Was this operation only for Trump's security?
It is clear from the entire incident that the American security system took precautions at many levels regarding Trump's visit in case of possible danger. Vintage Air Force One was used as a sort of illusion plane while Trump was escorted out in another military aircraft. This entire matter has also raised many questions regarding the privacy and security arrangements in the US President's foreign trips. The reports available so far are based on intelligence inputs about the threat, so it is too early to project it as a definite assassination plot by Iran.
