New Delhi: On August 15, 2026, India will celebrate Independence Day, marking the country's liberation from British colonial rule after almost two centuries. The day is dedicated to remembering and honouring the courage and sacrifices of the freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the nation's freedom.

Independence Day is celebrated in the whole country and includes flag-hoisting ceremonies, patriotic programmes, cultural events and activities that highlight India’s history, unity and achievements. Every year on this auspicious occasion, the Indian Prime Minister hoists the national flag at the Red Fort in New Delhi and addresses the nation.

Which number of Independence Day will India be celebrating this year?

India will be celebrating its 80th Independence Day on 15 August 2026. But confusion has arisen many times regarding the number of Independence Days. This confusion arises because we use two different methods for counting. India got inedependence on 15 August 1947. The number of years since our independence can be calculated by:

2026 – 1947 = 79 years

But the calculation for the celebration count is done by adding one more to the difference:

2026 – 1947 + 1 = 80

Therefore, we can say that India has been independent for 79 years, but we will be celebrating our 80th  this year.

What is the significance of Independence Day?

India’s Independence Day marks the day on which India gained freedom from British oppression after nearly two centuries-long nationwide struggle. The path to gaining freedom was very tough. It was guided by our leaders, revolutionaries, and even ordinary citizens who refused to be under the British and wanted Purna Swaraj.

The Indian National Congress played an important role in the national movement. Leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, and many others contributed to India’s struggle for freedom.
