Bhopal:  After Gujarat passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026, on March 25, now Madhya Pradesh has geared up to implement  the UCC in the next six months. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has asked the state’s Home Department to start working on drafting the Bill.

What did the government say?

The state government has informed the home department to prepare the final draft of the bill within the next six months.

Will the state government study Uttarakhand and Gujarat model?

The Chief Minister has directed officials to thoroughly study the UCC laws of Uttarakhand, which became the first state to implement UCC in 2025, and Gujarat, which recently came into effect in March 2026.

A state-level committee will soon be formed to do this, consisting of legal experts, senior officials, and representatives of various communities.

The committee will study the UCC bills/laws of Gujarat and Uttarakhand, including what was the process adopted by them, how it was implemented and other associated aspects, to prepare a draft bill withing six months.

What did the minister say?

Madhya Pradesh Cooperation Minister Vishwas Kailash Sarang said that, "It is essential to have the same set of laws for every citizen in the country. Every person must have the same rights. With the UCC, the country's unity, integrity, and a better future will be ensured."

Did opposition raise objection?

While the ruling party is calling it a historic step , the opposition has questioned the government's intentions.

Leader of the Opposition in the assembly, Umang Singhar, said that instead of rushing into action, the government should take all sections and communities into confidence.

He warned that imposing laws without consultation could disrupt the social fabric.

"Everyone should be consulted and taken into confidence by the govt before the law is framed," he said.

What will be the impact on life?

After the UCC is implemented, marriage registration will be mandatory, divorce laws will be uniform across all religions, and daughters will have equal rights to ancestral property. Polygamy is likely to be completely banned, as has been done in Gujarat and Uttarakhand.
