Delhi-NCR Hit by Torrential Rain and Thunderstorms, Flights Diverted, Roads Flooded

New Delhi: After heavy rains in Delhi-NCR on Monday morning, the pace of the capital came to a halt. Roads were filled with water in many areas and vehicular movement was affected. Due to waterlogging, there was traffic jam on many major roads. Bad weather also affected Delhi Airport. 15 flights arriving here were diverted to other cities. Of these, 12 flights were sent to Jaipur, two to Chandigarh and one to Lucknow. Three international flights were also diverted to Jaipur. 

Where did the rain stop the pace of Delhi?

The effect of rain since morning was visible in many parts of Delhi. Waterlogging was reported around New Ashok Nagar Metro Station, Burari, CR Park and Alaknanda. There was waterlogging in Jakhira underpass also. At many places people had to cross through water.  

Has heavy rain in Chhatarpur, Lodhi Road also been affected?

According to the data of the Meteorological Department, 28 mm of rain was recorded in Chhatarpur between 8:30 am and 11:30 am. Lodhi Road received 24.6 mm rainfall and Pitampura received 18.5 mm rainfall. 5 mm rain was recorded in Ridge, 1.5 mm in Mayur Vihar and 1 mm in Safdarjung. Along with the rain, strong winds also blew in many areas. 

People were seen struggling with water in Gurugram and Noida also?

The effect of rain was also felt in the cities bordering Delhi. Waterlogging was reported in Sector-46 of Gurugram, while roads were filled with water in many areas including Sector-95 of Noida. School children and other people had to wade through waterlogged roads in Sangam Vihar. Due to accumulated water in low-lying areas, daily commuting was directly affected.

Why did the Meteorological Department issue the alert?

The weather office has warned of heavy to moderate rain along with thunderstorms and lightning in many parts of Delhi. Red alert was issued for some areas and orange alert for other parts. The speed of strong winds is expected to reach 40 kilometers per hour. On Monday, rain was recorded in South-East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North-East Delhi and many other parts of the capital. 

What did the airlines say to the flight passengers?

Air traffic was also affected due to bad weather. After 15 flights were diverted, Air India and IndiGo issued advisories for passengers. Both airlines asked passengers to check the latest status of their flights before leaving for the airport. In view of waterlogging and traffic on the road, passengers have been advised to leave with extra time.
