D.Y. Patil, Former Governor And Senior Congress Leader, Dies At 90

New Delhi: Former Governor of Tripura, West Bengal, and Bihar, and renowned educationist DY Patil passed away on Tuesday due to old age, according to family sources. He breathed his last at his residence in Maharashtra's Kolhapur. As per reports, his health had deteriorated due to advancing age for the past few days.  

What happened to DY Patil?

For the past few months, DY Patil was suffering from health problems arising due to his advancing age. He was undergoing treatment, but on Tuesday he breathed his last in Kolhapur. He was the father of senior Congress leader and MLA Satej Patil. 

What about DY Patil's contributions to the education sector?

DY Patil overcame adverse circumstances and weaved a huge network of education in Maharashtra. Today, more than 150 institutions and many reputed universities are functioning in the state and the country through the 'DY Patil Group' that he founded. He is credited with making medical, engineering, and higher education accessible to children. 

What about his political career?

Apart from being a successful entrepreneur, DY Patil also made his mark in politics. From serving as the Mayor of Kolhapur to being a minister in the state cabinet, he held important positions. He was later appointed as the Governor of Tripura and Bihar. During this period, he also handled the additional charge of the Governor of West Bengal with distinction. Due to his calm and guiding leadership, he was respected by all political parties.

The Government of India honored him with the highest civilian award, the 'Padma Shri', in 1991 for his unparalleled contribution in the fields of social development, health and especially education. This award was a recognition of his continuous social service. 

As soon as the news of his death was heard, political leaders, educationists and dignitaries from various fields across the country expressed deep grief.
