According to the BCCI, during practice on Thursday, Shubman Gill was hit by a ball on the ring finger of his right hand.
New Delhi: Ahead of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, Team India has received an injury scare. Test captain Shubman Gill sustained an injury during a practice session and did not take the field on the opening day of the practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. In his absence, senior batter KL Rahul led the side. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) clarified that Gill's absence was only a precautionary measure and that no serious injury has been reported so far.
When and how did Shubman Gill get injured?
According to the BCCI, during practice on Thursday, Shubman Gill was hit by a ball on the ring finger of his right hand. The medical team examined him immediately after his injury. After this, it was decided that he would not be fielded in the practice match. The team management believes that it would not be right to take risks with the fitness of any player before the Test series. Therefore, they are being given rest, and their condition is being monitored.
Who took over the captaincy in the practice match?
Due to Gill being out, KL Rahul took the responsibility of captaining the Indian team on the first day. Rahul has already led the team on many occasions, so the team management did not face any problem regarding leadership. The purpose of the practice match is to prepare the players according to the local conditions; hence, this change in captaincy is being considered only temporary.
Can the test series be affected?
At present, there is no official information that Gill may be out of the first Test. BCCI has only said that his injury is being monitored. If his finger remains completely fine in the next few days, then there is a possibility of him playing in the first Test. Gill's fitness is considered very important for the Indian team because he is also the captain of the Test team.
How important is the practice match for Team India?
This practice match is being considered a big opportunity for the players to gain rhythm before the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The batsmen are getting the opportunity to adapt to the local conditions and the bowlers are getting the opportunity to find the right line-length. In such a situation, the team management does not want to rush into the fitness of any player, and that is why Gill was rested.
What will be the future strategy of Team India?
The entire focus of the Indian team will now be on the fitness of Shubman Gill. If he becomes completely healthy soon, he can also be given a chance for match practice before the first Test. At the same time, KL Rahul taking over the captaincy also shows that the team has the option of experienced leadership. At present, the Indian team aims to enter the Test series without any new injuries so that a strong start can be made against Sri Lanka.
