Bhiwandi: At least three people were killed and several feared trapped after a four-storey residential building collapsed in Maharashtra's Bhiwandi late on Thursday night, officials said. The accident has caused panic in the area and rescue operations are underway at the scene.
Where did the incident happen?
A portion of the Kohinoor Building in Balaji Nagar, a locality in the powerloom town of Maharashtra's Bhiwandi, caved in around 11:30 pm, officials said. Clear information regarding casualties and the cause of the collapse is still unclear.

What did the police say?
Upon receiving information about the incident, teams from the police, municipal corporation, and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) arrived at the scene, and rescue operations are underway on a war footing.
At the time, a portion of the four-story building collapsed, people were sleeping in their homes. According to initial reports, 8 to 10 people may be trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are underway to safely evacuate those trapped under the debris.

The local administration has established a security cordon around the site and appealed to the public to ignore rumors and not obstruct rescue operations. Official information regarding the number of injured or dead is still awaited.

What did the government say?
Giving further details about the incident, Bhiwandi West MLA Mahesh Chaugule stated that the Kohinoor Building, located in the Bhandari Compound in Narpoli, was destroyed. The Municipal Corporation had previously declared the building a "C-category" (extremely dangerous and dilapidated), after which it was evacuated. However, despite the building being empty, some workers were still working on the ground floor. It is estimated that approximately 6 to 7 workers may be trapped under the debris.
