Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case: Prime Accused Sonam Surrenders Before Trial Court
Police said Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is the prime accused in the murder case, and Raja Raghuvanshi's wife were remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.
Shillong: In the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Sonam, the prime accused in the alleged killing of her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya in May 2025, surrendered before a trial court in Shillong after the Supreme Court cancelled her bail and directed her to surrender within three weeks.
When did Sonam Raghuvanshi surrender?
Police said Sonam Raghuvanshi, who is the prime accused in the murder case, and Raja Raghuvanshi's wife, was remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.
Sonam, after the Supreme Court decision, surrendered before a trial court in Meghalaya. The Top Court on July 23 revoked Sonam's bail and ordered her to surrender within three weeks. The accused was arrested in June last year over the murder of his husband.
Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya, informed that Sonam, who was residing in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday.
What happened at the Meghalaya HC?
Meghalaya High Court on June 29 upheld a trial court's bail order in the case of Sonam Raghuvanshi. The Meghalaya government appealed this decision to the Supreme Court. A bench of Justices M M Sundresh and P B Varale subsequently cancelled Sonam's bail and accepted the Meghalaya government's petition. Supreme Court also said that Sonam can file a fresh bail petition in the absence of any further proceedings in the trial and if the case is not disposed of within six months.
What is the case?
Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested in June 2025 for the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi. The couple had taken their honeymoon trip to Meghalaya. Both went missing in the Sohra area of this state, however. After this, a big search operation was initiated by Meghalaya Police. Raja's body was found in a deep ravine a few days later. Police said that Sonam conspired with her alleged lover, Raj Kushwaha, and hired killers to kill Raja while he was on a honeymoon with her.
