Telegram Makes Comeback On Play Store And App Store Following Temporary Ban
Telegram was taken down from the App Store in June after the central government invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act (IT Act).
New Delhi: Telegram has returned to both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store in India after being temporarily removed in June following a directive from the central government. The messaging app is now being restored in phases and is once again available for download to most users.
Why was Telegram removed in India?
In June, the central government had directed the removal of Telegram from the App Store under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act (IT Act). The government feared that some Telegram channels could be used for sensitive and illegal activities. This provision empowers the government to limit access to online content in matters related to national security, public order, and the sovereignty of the country.
When and how did Telegram return?
Re-listing on Telegram started from June 23 after the completion of the NEET-UG re-exam. The app was first made available on the Google Play Store, after which it was also reinstated on the Apple App Store. Gradually, the app was made available to all users.
What was the connection with NEET-UG re-exam?
Officials feared that question papers or other confidential material related to the NEET-UG re-exam could be shared through Telegram channels. For this reason, it was decided to temporarily remove the app until the examination process is completed.
