Vaibhav Sooryavanshi led India to victory against Zimbabwe by scoring a half-century in just 19 balls and joined the special list of players who scored their first T20 fifty in the least number of innings.
Harare: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi created history with his brilliant batting in the first T20 match against Zimbabwe. His blistering half-century helped India defeat the hosts by seven wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Vaibhav reached his first international half-century in just 19 balls, setting several records.
Did Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make a comeback?
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the youngest player to score a half century in any format of international cricket. The the 15-year-old, who became the youngest player to make an international debut for India, was unable to score big in the initial matches, but he made a strong comeback against Zimbabwe.
Sooryavanshi smashed 50 off only 18 balls in an innings studded with four sixes and four fours.
Vaibhav gave India a quick start. But Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for just one run. Vaibhav completed his half-century off 18 balls but was dismissed the very next ball. Ishan Kishan returned to the pavilion after scoring 35 runs in 24 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes.
Did Vaibhav surpass Kohli and Gill in this special list?
Vaibhav reached his maiden T20I fifty for India in just his fourth innings. In this regard, he surpassed both Shubman Gill, who took six innings to reach his maiden T20I fifty, and Virat Kohli, who reached his maiden fifty in his eighth innings.
However, the record for India's first T20 fifty in the shortest innings still belongs to Robin Uthappa, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, and Ishan Kishan. All of these batsmen scored half-centuries in their debut T20 matches.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has now joined the list of Indian players who have scored their first fifty in the fourth T20 innings. This list also includes big names like Virender Sehwag, KL Rahul, Shivam Dube and Kedar Jadhav.
What about Dhoni?
The most surprising name on this list is former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni took 66 innings to score his first T20 International fifty for India. He is at the bottom of the list. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya took 43 innings to reach his first T20I fifty.
