Sonam Wangchuk's Health Update: Blood Sugar Low, Condition Stable, Says Hospital

New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk is currently admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. In the health bulletin, doctors stated that his vital parameters are stable but flagged persistent medical concerns linked to his prolonged fast in support of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) protest.

What is there in the health bulletin?

The Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday issued a health bulletin at 9 am and doctors said that Sonam Wangchuk's blood sugar levels continue to remain on the lower side, while his serum potassium level stood at 3.2 mEq/L based on a sample collected overnight.

According to the health bulletin, the activist also continues to have persistent pancytopenia, characterised by anaemia and low leukocyte counts, warranting continued close monitoring through serial investigations.

"In view of his ongoing mild to moderate dehydration, persistent laboratory abnormalities, and the physiological stress associated with prolonged fasting, sustained medical supervision and continuous clinical monitoring remain essential for his recovery and for the timely identification and management of any potential complications," the bulletin said.

The hospital in the health bulletin said that Sonam Wangchuk is receiving oral rehydration solution (ORS) and oral potassium supplements. However, doctors said he has continued to refuse intravenous fluids and glucose despite repeated medical advice. 

When was Sonam Wangchuk admitted to the hospital?

Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 in support of the ongoing protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of  Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Even at Safdarjung Hospital, Sonam Wangchuk has not ended his hunger strike.

The activist had been on a hunger strike for the past three weeks. On July 18, Delhi Police took him to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, Wangchuk had requested to be discharged from the hospital to join the Cockroach Janata Party's Parliament March.
