IMD Issues Severe Heatwave Alert for Four States; When Will the Monsoon Arrive?
On Wednesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alert for Rajasthan due to intense heat.
New Delhi: Amid the intense heat across the country, some relief news has emerged regarding the monsoon. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this year the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive about four days earlier than normal. Typically, the monsoon reaches Kerala around June 1, but this time it is expected to reach the Kerala coast between May 25 and 27.
What did IMD say?
The IMD has predicted that rain and strong winds will prevail for the next four to six days due to a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal. A cyclonic circulation has been present in the Bay of Bengal and the Comorin coast of India for a long time. As a result, a strong low-pressure area has formed in the southwest Bay of Bengal, near northern Sri Lanka and the Tamil Nadu coast.
According to the IMD, a weather system has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal. It is expected to strengthen over the next 48 hours. This will increase rainfall activity in many states of South India and will also help accelerate the advance of the monsoon.

On Wednesday, the IMD has issued orange alert for Rajasthan due to intense heat. Amidst the ongoing heat wave in the plains, the temperature in Barmer, Rajasthan has reached 47.3 degrees Celsius. The department has warned that severe heat waves will blow in western Rajasthan for the next one week. Along with this, eastern Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will also be affected by severe heat for the next 4-5 days. The department has also issued an alert of heavy rain in the states of South and North-East India. Heavy rain may occur in some parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka in the next few days
Where will it rain?
Northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are expected to experience very heavy rainfall between May 13 and 18. Heavy rain warnings have also been issued for the Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim on Wednesday. A new western disturbance will become active in northern India from May 15, which could bring rain and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.
How will the weather be in Delhi?
Heavy rain was recorded in Delhi-NCR late Tuesday evening. However, a strong wind warning has been issued for surrounding states. The IMD has predicted that people may find relief from the heat. Light rain and strong winds are expected again late Wednesday evening, bringing pleasant weather.
What about weather in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh?
People in the plains of North India will experience some relief from the heat. On Wednesday, dust storms with winds of up to 40-50 kmph and thunderstorms are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Western Uttar Pradesh may also experience strong winds of up to 30-40 kmph and scattered rain.
