As Bihar gears up for its 2025 assembly elections in November, the Nitish Kumar-led government is set to unveil a major relief measure: free electricity for up to 100 units per household. Sources revealed on July 12, 2025, that the Energy Department’s proposal, greenlit by the Finance Department, will be tabled at the next cabinet meeting, likely within a week. This initiative, aimed at easing financial burdens, is seen as a strategic move to bolster voter support for the ruling Janata Dal (United)-BJP coalition.

Bihar's Pre-Election Gift

The free electricity scheme is expected to benefit over 1.25 crore households across Bihar, particularly low-income families struggling with rising power costs. With 100 units covering basic needs like lighting and fans, the policy could save households approximately Rs 500–700 monthly, based on current tariffs of Rs 5.5–7 per unit. The Energy Department estimates an annual cost of Rs 2,000 crore, to be funded through state subsidies and central power grants, ensuring fiscal viability.

Nitish Govt's Big Move

The proposal, finalized after months of deliberation, includes measures to prevent misuse, such as linking benefits to Aadhaar-verified meters.  The scheme aligns with Nitish Kumar’s “Har Ghar Bijli” initiative, which achieved 100% rural electrification in 2018, and aims to enhance access in a state.

Bihar's Energy Relief

The announcement has sparked debate, with opposition parties like RJD labeling it an “election gimmick,” while supporters argue it addresses a pressing public need. Social media reactions on X highlight mixed sentiments, with some praising the relief and others questioning its timing. The scheme follows other pre-poll measures, like free water connections, signaling a competitive electoral landscape.
