UN Maritime Agency Pauses Ship Evacuations Through Strait Of Hormuz After On Vessel
IMO boss Arsenio Dominguez made it clear that nothing is more important than life. No ship will be released until we are 100% confident that passage is safe.
Tehran: The temperature in the Middle East is rising and now its effect is visible on the sea as well. The situation near the Strait of Hormuz has worsened so much that the UN maritime agency IMO has stopped rescuing stranded ships. A commercial ship was attacked near Oman. IMO says bluntly, 'Until safety at sea is guaranteed, we will not take any risk.'
Why did IMO suddenly stop operations?
IMO boss Arsenio Dominguez made it clear that nothing is more important than life. No ship will be released until we are 100% confident that passage is safe. They also said that the ship which was attacked was not a part of our rescue mission. Meaning the matter is even more complicated.
What happened to Oman?
According to the British Army, someone fired a projectile at a ship near the coast of Oman. It was fortunate that the ship was only damaged and no one was injured. But this one attack has put the entire area on alert. Now every ship is being closely monitored.
Did the attack happen after Iran's threat?
Just hours before the attack, Iran had threatened not to use any new sea route without Tehran's approval. And then this attack happened. Now everyone is wondering whether this was the result of that warning.
Who was the attacker?
UKMTO simply acknowledged that the ship had been damaged. But who attacked and why no one knows. Neither any country nor any organisation took responsibility.
What will happen to the ships now?
For now, the ships stranded in Hormuz will remain stranded there. The rescue plan has been shelved. Shipping agencies around the world are watching the situation with bated breath. Unless the sea is calm, taking any step is not without danger.
What new order has Iran issued now?
After the attack, Iran's new agency Persian Gulf Strait Authority has issued a direct threat. They said, 'If any ship deviates from the fixed route, we will not guarantee its safety.' After this statement, the shipping companies are in shock.
Why is Hormuz so important?
Oman and IMO together created a second safe route here. Half of the world's crude oil and gas comes from this narrow strip. If anything goes wrong here, the prices of petrol and diesel will skyrocket and international trade will be shaken. That's why everyone's eyes are on this.
