Abraham Accords: In his latest move, US President Donald Trump stated that he believes Iran could join the Abraham Accords. Abraham Accords is a peace agreement which is signed during Trump's first term in office under which Israel normalized diplomatic relations with four Muslim-majority nations.
During the press conference held at the White House, President Trump who was present with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by his side, and said, "Who knows, maybe even Iran can get in there." He continued to add, "I think they're going to be open to it. I really believe that. But they could be a member."
All about Abraham Accords
For the unknown, it is a set of agreements that establishes diplomatic normalization between Israel and several other states. It was a signature achievement of Trump’s first term. The agreement was signed in 2020. It is worthy to be mention here that UAE and Bahrain were the first to sign the agreement, and later Morocco and Sudan were the next to sign it.
Interestingly, Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, played a prominent role in getting this deal done. His this move was labeled in Washington and Jerusalem as a breakthrough achievement.
The biggest diplomatic prize for Israel was its deal with the UAE, a wealthy oil producer and trade hub with global reach. Since then, the two countries have deepened economic and security ties, including a free trade pact and cooperation in defense technology.
However, the accords have not been immune to strain. Earlier this month, the UAE warned Israel that annexation in the occupied West Bank would cross a “red line” and “severely undermine the spirit of the accords.” The warning followed comments from a far-right Israeli minister vowing to bury the idea of a Palestinian state through settlement expansion.
Palestinian leaders, for their part, condemned the agreements from the start. They saw them as a betrayal — a move by Arab governments to normalize relations with Israel without first demanding tangible progress toward Palestinian statehood.
Accords in Future
After signing the, Abraham Accords, the former US President Joe Biden and now Donald Trump, have left no stone unturned to build on the accords’. With this move, the US authorities hopes that economic cooperation between Israel and Arab partners could ease the normalization across the region.
However, Saudi Arabia has opposed this idea of normalising relations with Israel till the Palestinian statehood is recognised.
The Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and the devastating war that followed in Gaza have made matters more complex. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, which has upset the Arab states and strained their relations with Israel.
