Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ certificate controversy escalates, as film makers move High Court seeking urgent relief
Rajinikanth’s latest film Coolie is breaking box office records, but its ‘A’ certificate has triggered controversy. A week post-release, producer Sun Pictures challenged CBFC’s decision in Madras High Court.

Coolie Certificate Controversy: Superstar Rajinikanth's film 'Coolie' is making a splash at the box office, but the 'A' certificate it received has become a cause of controversy. A week after its release, the film's producer, Sun Pictures, has approached the Madras High Court against the decision of the Central Board of Film Certification. The producers say that this film was made for audiences of all ages, but due to the 'A' certificate, fans below 18 years of age cannot watch it in theaters.
'Coolie' was released on 14 August 2025 and received a tremendous response from the audience. The film earned around Rs 400 crore in the first week itself. But the CBFC gave it an 'A' certificate, citing violent scenes in the film, which surprised the producers. Sun Pictures argued in court that films like 'KGF' and 'Beast' got U/A certificates, which had more violence than 'Coolie.' Still, why was 'Coolie' given a strict rating?
Rajinikanth’s Coolie Controversy Continues
The producers said that they had applied for certification on July 28, but on July 31, the CBFC said that the film has scenes promoting violence. The revising committee also retained the 'A' certificate on August 4. Sun Pictures has demanded a U/A certificate from the court so that Rajinikanth's young fans can also watch the film.
Now why did the makers approach the High Court?
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, 'Coolie' stars Rajinikanth along with Nagarjuna, Aamir Khan, Shruti Haasan, and Sathyaraj. The film celebrates 50 years of Rajinikanth's cinematic journey. During the hearing in the court, the CBFC said that the producers refused to make the cuts required for 'U/A' and accepted the 'A' certificate.
The hearing of this case will be held on August 25
Now Justice T.V. Tamilselvi will hear the case on August 25. Fans are giving mixed reactions to this controversy. Some believe that the 'A' certificate may affect the film's earnings, because Rajinikanth's films are usually watched with family
