Islamabad: At a time when the entire music industry is mourning the demise of legendary singer Asha Bhosle, a channel in Pakistan has been issued a notice for showing content related to the veteran singer's death and tribute. A letter has been issued by the Pakistani regulator, stating that broadcasting Indian content is prohibited and the channel has been asked to explain its actions.

What is the buzz?

Pakistani broadcaster Geo News has been issued a show cause notice by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for showing content related to Asha Bhosle's death.

What did the Pakistani broadcaster say?

Azhar Abbas, Managing Director of Geo News and President of the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors in Pakistan, while sharing the news on X, said that,"PEMRA has issued a show-cause notice to Geo News for airing content related to the legendary subcontinent singer Asha Bhosle.
It has always been customary to revisit and celebrate the work of iconic artists when reporting on them. In fact, for an artist of Asha Bhosle’s stature, we should have shared even more of her timeless and memorable songs than we did. Yet, Pakistan’s electronic media regulator, Pemra, has chosen to restrict this."

What is there in the notice?

The notice stated a violation of the Supreme Court order. A PEMRA notice was issued to Geo News, objecting to the Pakistani channel's display of Indian songs and scenes from Indian films while broadcasting the news of Asha Bhosle's death.

The notice described this as a deliberate violation of the Pakistan Supreme Court's decision, which had banned the broadcast of Indian content.

In 2018, the Supreme Court of Pakistan had banned the broadcast of Indian content on the country's TV channels.

The notice summoned Geo News CEO Mir Ibrahim Rahman on April 27. The channel has also been asked to explain in writing within 14 days why legal action should not be initiated against them.
