PM Surya Ghar Yojana: Free 300 Units of Electricity for 1 Crore Homes, Plus Earnings
Launched in 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is transforming how Indian households access electricity.

Business News: In 2024, India launched the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a transformative scheme aimed at providing up to 300 units of free electricity to one crore households while offering an opportunity to earn income. This initiative, rooted in sustainable energy, is reducing electricity bills and empowering families across the nation.
A Vision for Sustainable Energy
Announced on February 13, 2024, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the PM Surya Ghar Yojana promotes rooftop solar panel installations to generate clean energy. With a budget of ₹75,021 crore, the scheme targets one crore households by 2027, aligning with India’s goal of achieving 40 GW of rooftop solar capacity by 2026. By harnessing solar power, the program reduces reliance on fossil fuels, supports environmental conservation, and creates job opportunities in solar installation and maintenance.
How It Works
Eligible households receive subsidies to install rooftop solar panels, covering up to 60% of costs for 2 kW systems and 40% for 2–3 kW systems. These panels generate up to 300 units of free electricity monthly, significantly cutting bills. Surplus power can be sold to local distribution companies (DISCOMs), allowing families to earn additional income. For a 3 kW system, households can save ₹15,000–₹18,000 annually. The application process is streamlined via the official portal (pmsuryaghar.gov.in), requiring proof of citizenship, a valid electricity connection, and a suitable rooftop.
Eligibility and Benefits
Indian citizens with roof ownership and an active electricity connection qualify, with priority given to low- and middle-income families. The scheme offers financial relief, energy independence, and environmental benefits. Subsidies are directly transferred to bank accounts, and concessional loans are available. As of April 2025, over 95 lakh households have registered, with installations expected to reach 40 lakh by March 2026.
A Brighter Future
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is revolutionizing India’s energy landscape. By providing free electricity and an income avenue, it empowers households while advancing sustainability. This bold initiative not only lights up homes but also paves the way for a greener, self-reliant India.
