WhatsApp banned 98 lakh accounts in India. Do you know the reason?

WhatsApp has banned more than 98 lakh accounts in India in June 2025. This action has been taken to curb abuse and harmful activities on the platform. This has been revealed in WhatsApp's latest India Monthly Report.

Tech News: Taking a big step towards monitoring and preventing misuse of digital platforms in India, WhatsApp has taken action on more than 98 lakh accounts in the month of June 2025. This information has come to light in the latest India Monthly Report of WhatsApp. Out of these, about 19.79 lakh accounts were banned by WhatsApp proactively, i.e., even before any user complaint.

WhatsApp has taken this step with the aim of preventing misuse, abuse, and harmful activities on its platform. Along with this, the company also took action on the complaints received from the users, in which some accounts were restored and some were permanently blocked.

Action was also taken on the complaints of users

WhatsApp received a total of 23,596 complaints from India in the month of June, out of which action was taken on 1,001 accounts. These actions included banning as well as restoring previously banned accounts after review.

Among these, the highest number of complaints came in the category of ban appeals, which was 16,069. WhatsApp took action on 756 of these accounts. Other categories included account support, product support, and security-related problems.

Abuse detection happens at three levels.

  • WhatsApp stated in its report that it identifies abuse on its platform in three steps—
  • At the time of account registration
  • During messaging
  • and negative feedback, such as through user reports and blocks
  • The company says that its primary focus is prevention because preventing an activity before it occurs is more effective than catching it later.

WhatsApp is committed to user safety

WhatsApp reiterated that it is fully committed to the safety of its users. For this, it resorts to end-to-end encryption, safety tools, and dedicated teams to deal with misinformation, abuse, and security threats on the platform. In addition, the company also said that it works with experts to promote cybersecurity and maintain the integrity of elections.

WhatsApp introduced two new features

Meanwhile, WhatsApp has launched two new tools for its business users—Status Ads and Promoted Channels. According to a report by WABetaInfo, these features are currently available for select Android beta users. The format of status ads is similar to Instagram story ads. Now business accounts can post paid content, which will appear among users' status updates with a Sponsored label to let people know it is an ad.
