Discord App Sparks Political Upheaval In Nepal And Allegedly Linked To Charlie Kirk Assassination
After violent unrest in Nepal, Discord has suddenly become a global talking point. The social media app, known for connecting communities, is now under scrutiny for fueling political change in Nepal and allegedly playing a role in Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

Tech News: Nepal faced political turmoil when the government banned 26 social media platforms. Generations of the country took to the streets in protest against the decision. Weeks of protests forced the KP Sharma Oli government to resign. At least 51 people lost their lives during this mass movement. But the protest was not just a sign of discontent, it also became a vehicle for a new political beginning.
The most unique thing was that this movement was led through a gaming chat app like Discord and through it Nepal got its next Prime Minister Sushila Karki, who has now become the country's first female interim Prime Minister.
How a social media ban sparked a rebellion
When the government banned 26 social media platforms in Nepal, it had the biggest impact on the country's Gen Z generation. The youth saw the decision as an attack on freedom of expression and started a movement. The social media platform Discord became the center of this protest, which is now being called not just a gaming chat app but a platform for the digital revolution.
What is Discord?
Discord is a chatting platform that was launched in 2015 by Jason Citron and Stanislav Wisniewski. It was initially created for the gaming community, but it quickly became popular among Gen Z during COVID. On this app, users get features like discussion through channels, voice chat, video streaming, and screen sharing. There is no feed, which prevents distractions and keeps the discussion serious.
How was the next leader of Nepal chosen on Discord?
The protesting youth created a Discord server called 'Youth Against Corruption', which had about 1.30 lakh members. A public poll was conducted on this server in which former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was elected as the Prime Minister. Karki received overwhelming support in this voting held on Wednesday, 10 September 2025. After this, President Ramchandra Paudel appointed him as the interim Prime Minister and administered the oath. Although it could not be confirmed how official and geographically accurate this voting was, its impact on public concern and digital public opinion was clear.
The movement's master plan
Different channels were created in this Discord server to organize the movement. This provided accurate, fast, and reliable information to each user, thereby strengthening transparency and collective leadership in the movement.
Discord's role in the Charlie Kirk case
Discord's role in the death of Charlie Kirk has also come to light in the US. Where 22-year-old Tyler Robinson was arrested in connection with the murder of the American activist at Utah Valley University. During the investigation, it was revealed that Robinson had made some comments on Discord, which his roommate showed to the police. However, the platform clarified that there is no evidence that the murder was planned on it.
Discord is not just a gaming platform, it is becoming the new face of global digital activism. Its use in Nepal is proof that technology can also be a vehicle for power change if it is in the right hands.
The role of controversy in Sushila Karki's election
Sushila Karki, who was elected through Discord, is now not just a leader but has become a symbol of digital democracy and the youth movement. She was elected through direct public participation, leaving behind the traditional political system, that too through the online platform Discord.
