Punjab Floods: Sant Seechewal Becomes Lifeline For Villagers Trapped In Beas River’s Wrath

For four weeks, Punjab’s Baupur Mand has been drowning in Beas river floods. While fields, homes and lives remain underwater, Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal stood with villagers, rescuing families, building boats and proving leadership means action, not words.

Punjab News: Sant Seechewal and his volunteers worked three days and nights without rest to create a massive rescue boat. This boat carried cattle, heavy farming machines and families to safer areas. It prevented losses worth lakhs and gave villagers relief in despair. Seechewal spends nearly ten hours daily on the waters. His team ferries food packets, drinking water and medicines to stranded families. While most leaders came for photos and left, he stayed for weeks, living among villagers in Mand’s flooded terrain.

Saving Lives And Animals

Every day, trapped families were rescued and children were carried to safety in his arms. He also helped villagers save their cattle, the backbone of farming families. By August’s end, nearly 300 animals had been saved through his determined mission.

Personal Sacrifice For People

On August 22, Seechewal cancelled his planned England trip. “I cannot leave my people in pain,” he said. This decision highlighted his character—choosing duty over personal comfort—and turned him into a symbol of sacrifice for flood-hit Punjab communities.

Leaders Came, He Stayed

After his efforts gained attention, other politicians visited Mand. Harbhajan Singh came on August 18, Punjab’s Water Resources Minister on August 20, and CM Bhagwant Mann on August 22. But villagers noted only Seechewal never left, staying throughout the disaster.

Villagers Call Him Their Hope

“When fields went underwater, we thought all was gone,” recalled farmer Nirmal Singh. “But Babaji arrived daily with his boat, and we knew we were not alone.” His work gave hope when everything else had drowned under Beas river’s fury.
