The Karchana area of Prayagraj is gripped by unrest after supporters of Azad Samaj Party and Bhim Army unleashed violence protesting the detention of their leader, Chandrashekhar Azad, who was barred from visiting a Dalit victim’s family in Isauta village. The unrest began when police barred Azad from visiting Isauta village to meet the family of a Dalit youth allegedly murdered in April. Enraged, hundreds of workers blocked Bhadewara intersection, pelting stones and vandalizing over a dozen vehicles, including police jeeps. Several people, including six police personnel, sustained injuries in the violence, which also saw two motorcycles set ablaze, escalating tensions in the region.
Police Crackdown and Heightened Security
In response, Prayagraj police have intensified security measures in Hanuman Mori and Bhadewara market to prevent further unrest. Additional forces, including PAC battalions, were deployed to restore order, with authorities resorting to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the mob. Police are conducting raids across Karchana to apprehend rioters, leading many ASP and Bhim Army workers to flee their homes to evade arrest. Over 50 suspects have been identified through CCTV footage, with 20 detained so far, facing charges under stringent laws like the National Security Act. The police aim to recover damages and ensure accountability.
Chandrashekhar’s Detention Sparks Outrage
The unrest stemmed from Azad’s detention at the Circuit House in Prayagraj, where he was stopped from visiting Isauta and Kaushambi due to law-and-order concerns. Azad, who staged a dharna, criticized the police for suppressing Dalit voices, demanding justice for victims of caste-based violence. His supporters, alleging administrative bias, targeted shops and commuters, intensifying the clash. The ASP, however, distanced itself from the violence, claiming the rioters were not party workers.
Restoring Peace Amid Tensions
The violence has sparked political outrage, with ASP accusing the state of stifling justice for marginalized communities. As Karchana remains on edge, police are maintaining a heavy presence to prevent further flare-ups. The incident highlights deep-seated issues of caste and governance, with calls for dialogue to address underlying grievances and restore calm.
