Indian Railways will launch a Kanwaria special train from Govindpuri, Prayagraj, to Jasidih, Jharkhand, during the sacred month of Sawan, starting July 2025, to facilitate devotees traveling to Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar. The train, equipped with general and sleeper coaches, aims to reduce congestion on regular services like the Vibhuti Express while enhancing pilgrims’ comfort. Special fruit and juice shops at railway stations will cater to Kanwarias, ensuring a smoother 582-kilometer journey to one of India’s twelve Jyotirlingas.

A Dedicated Service for Kanwarias

The Kanwaria special train, operating daily during Sawan, addresses the massive influx of devotees who undertake the arduous trek to offer Ganga water at Baba Baidyanath Dham. With 20 coaches, including 10 general and 8 sleeper class, the train is designed to accommodate thousands of pilgrims, many traveling on foot or by road. Covering the route in approximately 12 hours, it departs Govindpuri at 5 PM and arrives in Jasidih by early morning, aligning with Kanwarias’ schedules. This initiative eases pressure on regular trains, which often face overcrowding during the pilgrimage season.

Enhanced Facilities for Pilgrims

These outlets will offer affordable, hygienic refreshments, addressing the nutritional needs of pilgrims enduring long journeys. Additional amenities, including water kiosks and medical aid posts, will be available at platforms, with volunteers assisting elderly and differently-abled devotees. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) will ensure crowd management and safety.

Relieving Infrastructure Strain

The special train aims to streamline pilgrim movement, reducing the burden on daily trains and mitigating road congestion caused by Kanwaria processions. Last year, over 1.5 crore devotees visited Deoghar, straining transport networks. This dedicated service reflects proactive planning by railway and state authorities.

A Spiritual Journey Made Easier

By introducing the Kanwaria special train, Indian Railways underscores its commitment to supporting cultural traditions while enhancing pilgrim safety and comfort. As Sawan approaches, this initiative promises a smoother, more organized pilgrimage to Baba Dham, fostering devotion and community spirit.
