New Delhi: Three people died in a massive fire that broke out in a residential building in South Delhi's Tughlakabad area early Friday, while eight were evacuated safely. The injured have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.

What happened after the fire?

According to Delhi Police and Fire Department, a fire was reported in a building near Nayanthara Apartment located at Street No. 1, Tughlakabad at around 2:25 am. As soon as the information was received, seven fire brigade vehicles reached the spot and relief and rescue operations were started. It is being told that the house where the fire broke out was located in a narrow street, due to which there were some difficulties in the initial relief work.

Fire department official Yashwant Meena said that the fire broke out in three scooters, two motorcycles and a bicycle parked in the parking area on the ground floor of the building. Within no time, fire and smoke spread throughout the building and reached the fifth floor. The ground floor, first and second floors suffered the most damage, while upper floors were also partially affected.

How was the rescue operation conducted?

During the rescue operation, fire brigade personnel reached the roof of the building and broke the lock of the closed gate and pulled out the people trapped inside. A total of eight people, including two girls, were rescued safely from the roof. They have been taken to the hospital with the help of CATS and PCR van.

After the incident, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) has demanded from the government that it should be made mandatory to install smoke detectors and sprinkler systems in all the buildings of the capital.

How many people lost their lives in this accident?

According to officials, a total of 31 people have lost their lives in two recent major fire incidents. These include the incident in Vivek Vihar and the fire in a hotel located in Malviya Nagar. There were no smoke detectors and sprinkler systems at either of the places, which further increased the damage.

The fire department believes that if modern fire safety systems are made mandatory in all buildings, the deaths and losses caused by fire can be significantly reduced.
