Sports News: Ahead of the first T20 International between India and Australia, Indian team captain Suryakumar Yadav provided the latest information on batsman Shreyas Iyer's injury. He stated that Iyer is now stable and under the care of doctors at a Sydney hospital.

Shreyas Iyer suffered a serious injury during a practice match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. He ran towards backward point to take the catch of Alex Carey, but fell hard on his ribs. Unable to get up immediately, the medical team took him from the field on a stretcher and rushed him to the hospital.

Initial tests suggested Iyer had suffered a rib injury, but it was later determined he had a serious spleen injury. This led to his immediate admission to the ICU so doctors could continuously monitor his condition.

Suryakumar Yadav gave health update

In a press conference the day before the match, Suryakumar Yadav said, "When I learned about Shreyas' injury, I immediately called him. However, he couldn't speak the first day because he didn't have a phone. Later, the team physio informed me that his condition was stable. Now, I've been talking to him for the past two days, and he's responding to texts, which means he's out of danger."

Surya further said that Iyer will be kept under observation for a few more days, but according to the doctors the situation is under control.

What is a spleen injury?

The spleen is a soft organ located beneath the ribs on the left side of the body that functions to protect against infection and remove old red blood cells. It contains many blood vessels, so injury to it can sometimes be life-threatening.

Minor injuries may only involve scratches or swelling, which heal on their own. However, serious injuries can cause internal bleeding, which may even require surgery.

Why was Shreyas Iyer kept in ICU?

The BCCI stated that Shreyas was kept in the ICU so that doctors could continuously monitor his condition for the first 48 hours. During this time, they would monitor for any new bleeding. If the patient's condition remains stable, he would be gradually allowed to eat, drink, and move around normally.

Often in such cases the player has to stay in the hospital for at least a week, so that the doctors can ensure that the injury does not recur.

How long will it take to recover completely?

According to doctors, a full recovery from a spleen injury can take 6 to 12 weeks. During this period, the player must refrain from any physical activity or training, as even a minor blow can cause bleeding again. This means Shreyas Iyer could be out of action for approximately three months. He will only return to the team once he is fully fit.

Team India's concerns increased

Iyer's injury has dealt a major blow to the Indian team's middle order. Suryakumar Yadav said the team is focusing on maintaining the morale of all players and hoping for Iyer's speedy recovery.
