It was named after Emily and Fanny, sisters of Lord Auckland, who served as Governor General of India from 1836 to 1842. Initially, the stadium was known as Auckland Circus Gardens, but its name was changed to Eden Gardens in 1841. This stadium, with a capacity of 66,000 spectators, is believed to have been originally built in 1864. Situated on the banks of the Hooghly River, the stadium hosted its first Test match in 1934. Since then, it has witnessed many historic matches, including the first IPL match in 2008.
