As per the reports, Mofakkarul Islam, the alleged mastermind of Kaliachak incident in Malda, was detained by CID at Bagdogra airport. After the arrest, he said, "The protest will continue till the names of the deleted voters get included in the list..."
As per the reports of PTI, the arrest took place at Siliguri's Bagdogra airport, two days after seven judicial officers were held hostage for eight hours.
"He is the mastermind of the Kaliachak incident in which seven judicial officers were gheraoed inside a BDO office for several hours on Wednesday night. He was trying to board a flight to flee," a senior officer informed PTI. In the case as many as 33 people have been arrested, including an ISF candidate.
What is the case?
The issue occurred as seven judicial officers involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in West Bengal's Malda were held for hours inside the Kaliachak 2 Block Development Office on Wednesday.
The crowd behind their confinement stated that genuine voters' names had been deleted from the electoral rolls before the state Assembly elections in Bengal.
It is to be noted here that three women were also part of the team of officers among hostages.
What the court said?
On Thursday, Supreme Court took strong objection against the hostage-taking of judges and even called it a “deplorable” and “calculated, well-planned” attempt.
“This is not a routine incident…it ex facie appears to be a calculated and deliberate move to demoralise judicial officers and obstruct them from discharging their duties," a bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said.
