What's the probe about?

The CBI is scrutinising the deadly crowd crush at a political rally in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, last September in which 41 people died and many more were injured. The inquiry was ordered by the Supreme Court after questions were raised about crowd management and safety arrangements.

Investigators are looking into several aspects of the incident, including how the event was organised, how the crowd was managed, and whether there were lapses in planning or execution that contributed to the tragedy. Statements given by Vijay are being matched with those of police officials and party aides as the agency tries to build a clearer picture of what happened.

What happened in the first questioning?

Vijay was previously questioned by the CBI for over six hours in New Delhi earlier this month. During that session, he denied responsibility for the stampede, saying neither he nor his party was to blame. Officials also questioned him about delays in his arrival at the rally and other details of the event.

The first round of questioning focused on safety arrangements, crowd estimates and how decisions were made on the day of the rally. The agency also examined evidence such as video footage, police records and statements from senior TVK leaders.

Is political activity continuing amid the probe?

Despite the ongoing investigation, plans are reportedly in place for Vijay to attend a TVK manifesto meeting after his Delhi visit. The party appears determined to continue its political activities even as the CBI conducts further questioning.

What’s next in the case?

The CBI’s follow-up questioning is likely to delve deeper into the roles of organisers and officials at the rally. A final decision on whether to file formal charges could come once investigators complete their analysis of all statements and evidence.

The Karur stampede remains a sensitive and closely watched case, with families of victims and political observers alike awaiting clarity on accountability and lessons for future public events
