The Tulbul Navigation Project, also known as the Wular Barrage, has been a topic of discussion for decades. Recently, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's decision to revive the project has sparked debate, with experts weighing in on its significance. Despite criticism from Mehbooba Mufti, the project is considered economically lucrative for Jammu and Kashmir and will contribute towards flood control.

A multifaceted project

The project of Tulbul Navigation is to facilitate navigation of the Jhelum River from October to February, with a navigational lock and control structure placed at the Wular Lake outfall. The project will help improve flood and water management via the Wular lake, resolving the problem of drainage in the downstream. Moreover, it will also assist in maintaining the needful depth of water in the Jhelum beneath the Wular lake during lean months so that navigation can be open all year round.

The time to give new life to the project

Experts feel that India is now ready to start work on the long-awaited Tulbul waterway project. Uttam Sinha, senior fellow at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, said the project has been suspended for diplomatic purposes, but it's within the Indus Water Treaty and can be completed. Kushwinder Vohra, former chairman of Central Water Commission, endorsed the view, pointing out the positives of the project regarding water depth, power generation, and flood control.

The People's hope for development

The residents of Jammu and Kashmir have waited for 40 years for the project's implementation. The revival of the project is viewed as a major boost to development and economic growth in the state. With its numerous advantages, the Tulbul Navigation Project has the capability to change the lives of individuals in Jammu and Kashmir.

The project is vital for the development of the region

The Tulbul Navigation Project is an important project that can induce economic development, flood mitigation, and enhanced navigation in Jammu and Kashmir. Even with criticism, experts opine that the project is vital for the development of the region. With its revival, the residents of Jammu and Kashmir can finally hope to enjoy the fruits of this pending project.
