Supreme Court’s Tough Stand: Illegal Logging Ravaged Mountains, Triggered Disasters And Left People Struggling

The Supreme Court raised alarm over rampant illegal logging in Himachal, Uttarakhand and Jammu-Kashmir, blaming it for floods and landslides, while directing the Center and agencies to act swiftly with strict preventive and corrective measures.

National News: The Supreme Court strongly stated that illegal deforestation in the hilly regions has turned into a grave threat for humanity. The judges observed that once the forests vanish, rivers will alter their natural course and mountains will collapse, creating devastation. Such reckless cutting is not merely a violation of law, it is an open assault on nature itself. Expressing deep concern, the court highlighted the worsening conditions in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

In these states, relentless rains have triggered massive landslides and floods, wiping out several villages. Roads have broken, houses have been flattened, and thousands of ordinary people have been rendered homeless. The court concluded that these disasters are nothing less than the fury of nature.

The Supreme Court issued notices to the Central Government, NDMA and state governments. The court asked why strict action has not been taken against illegal felling till now. The court said that if the forests are not protected, the situation will become more terrible in the coming years.

People's problems increased

Due to landslides and floods, the life of the common people has become difficult. Somewhere roads were broken, somewhere bridges were washed away. Farmers lost their crops and daily wage labourers became unemployed. The court said that this trouble is not just the result of weather but also human negligence. Studies in schools came to a halt and children had to be taken to safer places.

Many people were forced to take shelter in relief camps. There was a crisis of drinking water and food in every village. The poor section was affected the most and their voice is not reaching the government.

Environmental balance is deteriorating

Scientists say that forests are nature's shield. Trees hold water and maintain soil. If trees are cut down, soil will be washed away and rivers will overflow. The court said that this imbalance in the environment is also a danger for future generations.

Experts say that the speed of melting of glaciers is also increasing. Due to the loss of greenery of mountains, the habitat of birds and animals has been destroyed. Where cold winds used to blow, now dust and heat are spreading. These conditions show that man has axed his own feet.

Protect Forests, Protect Humanity

The Supreme Court has cautioned that if immediate steps are not taken, the crisis will spiral out of control. The judges stressed that saving forests is not merely a legal obligation but a matter tied directly to human survival and livelihood. At this moment, humanity must learn to live in harmony with nature rather than exploiting it. The court further underlined that the government must frame tougher laws and ensure their strict enforcement.

At the same time, raising awareness among people at the grassroots is equally essential so that they themselves take part in protecting trees. Preserving the environment is not just the task of the judiciary or the administration; it is a shared duty of every citizen. If timely actions are ignored today, the coming generations will suffer the consequences and hold us accountable.
