Reservation has become like a train compartment... Why did the Supreme Court say this?

The Supreme Court spoke a massive thing in the context of reservation. While considering the petition against OBC reservation in Maharashtra municipal body polls, the apex court said that the reservation has turned into a train compartment, the one who boarded does not wish others to board.

SEC to issue notification within a period of four weeks

Justice Surya Kant noted that why only some class of people need to be given reservation? Why not other people who are socially, economically and politically backward need reservation? The states need to take this on their mind. The Supreme Court has directed the Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) to issue notification within a period of four weeks for the state's local body polls.

Democracy cannot be stopped: SC

The Supreme Court, in its order, said that reservation to OBC communities will be given as per the same law as it was before the commission's 2022 report in Maharashtra. The court also added that extension can be sought in deserving cases. The court said that grassroot democracy cannot be stopped.

What did the petitioner's lawyer say?

Senior counsel Indira Jai Singh, petitioner's counsel, insisted on conducting Maharashtra local body polls. However, here, the Supreme Court instructed the Maharashtra government's counsel to be present in the court, following which the court instructed the release of the election notification. The court had earlier said that it is a constitutional mandate to conduct the local body polls within five years. There are 2,486 local governments where elections are due and no elected representative is present. Isn't this a violation of laws and regulations?
