Odisha CM Transfers Puri SP, Collector After Rath Yatra Stampede, Announces Rs 25 Lakh Aid

In the wake of a tragic stampede during the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri that claimed three lives ,Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced decisive measures.Additionally, Rs 25 lakh compensation has been sanctioned for the families of each deceased devotee, reflecting the state’s commitment to accountability and support as the festival continues until July 7.

Response to a Devastating Incident

The stampede, occurring near Gundicha Temple at around 4:30 AM during the chariot procession, resulted in three deaths and multiple injuries due to a crowd surge. The incident exposed lapses in crowd management, prompting CM Majhi to act swiftly. The transfer of senior officials signals a push for improved oversight during the remaining Rath Yatra events, with thousands of devotees still expected to participate in rituals like the Bahuda Yatra and Suna Besha.

New Leadership Appointed

Pinak Mishra, previously DIG of the Special Task Force, brings extensive experience in security operations to his role as Puri SP. Both officers have been directed to implement robust measures, including enhanced barricading and real-time crowd monitoring, to prevent further incidents until the festival concludes. 

Compensation and Support

 Hospitals in Puri and Bhubaneswar are treating the injured, with the state covering medical expenses. Helplines are operational to assist families, and a high-level probe is underway to investigate the stampede’s causes.
