The National Investigation Agency (NIA) uncovered a disturbing conspiracy behind the April 8, 2025, Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists. The Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, hiding in the rugged mountains south of Baisaran Valley, were sustained by local overground workers (OGWs) who provided food, shelter, and logistical support. This betrayal, detailed in NIA’s latest findings, has shaken Jammu and Kashmir.

The Mountain Hideout

The three Pakistani LeT terrorists, along with a local recruit, Adil Hussain Thoker, evaded capture by concealing themselves in dense forests near Hill Park, Pahalgam. The NIA’s investigation, under case RC-02/2025/NIA/JMU, revealed they used a seasonal shepherd’s hut as a base, strategically located behind a mountain to avoid detection. The terrain’s inaccessibility delayed security forces’ pursuit, giving the attackers a temporary safe haven.

Local Traitors Unmasked

Two OGWs, Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar from Batkote and Jashir Ahmad Jothar from Hill Park, were arrested on June 22 for aiding the terrorists. During interrogation, they confessed to supplying food, blankets, and a burner, while guiding the group to the hideout. The NIA recovered incriminating evidence, including a blood-stained raincoat and communication devices, linking the OGWs to the plot. Their betrayal enabled the terrorists to plan the attack undetected.

The Attack’s Brutal Execution

On April 8, the terrorists, armed with M4 carbines and AK-47s, struck Baisaran Valley, targeting tourists based on religious identity. The 10-minute assault left 16 injured and sent shockwaves across India. A photographer’s video and forensic evidence helped the NIA reconstruct the attack, leading to the OGWs’ arrests. The agency now seeks the four terrorists, offering a ₹20 lakh reward.

Strengthening Security Measures

The NIA’s findings highlight the role of local collaborators in terror plots, prompting calls for stricter vigilance in Kashmir. With the Amarnath Yatra approaching, security forces are intensifying patrols and community outreach to prevent further betrayals. The Pahalgam plot’s exposure underscores the need for unity to combat terrorism and restore peace.
