Relentless monsoon rains have unleashed chaos across Uttarakhand, with flash floods causing widespread destruction, particularly in the Sens Valley of Kullu, Himachal Pradesh. In Sens Valley, surging waters have damaged numerous homes, while several people have been swept away by the floods. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is conducting intensive search operations for three missing individuals, but no trace has been found yet. The disaster has disrupted lives and highlighted the region’s vulnerability to monsoon fury.

Destruction in Sens Valley

In Kullu’s Sens Valley, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods that inundated villages, damaging or destroying dozens of homes. Mud-brick structures and makeshift shelters were particularly hard-hit, with floodwaters washing away household belongings.  The devastation has left families homeless, with temporary relief camps set up to provide shelter and essentials as the community grapples with the aftermath.

Search for the Missing

The floods have claimed several lives, with three individuals still unaccounted for in Sens Valley. The NDRF, supported by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, is scouring swollen rivers and debris-laden areas for the missing. Operations are hampered by ongoing rain, strong currents, and poor visibility, but rescue teams remain determined. Drones and boats are being deployed to cover remote stretches, while families anxiously await updates on their loved ones.

Response and Relief Efforts

Authorities have mobilized relief efforts, with the Himachal and Uttarakhand governments coordinating aid distribution. Food, water, and medical supplies are being provided to affected residents. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings of continued heavy rainfall, prompting heightened vigilance. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured full support, directing officials to prioritize rescue and rehabilitation.

A Region Under Siege

The floods underscore the urgent need for improved infrastructure and early warning systems in monsoon-prone areas. As Uttarakhand and Sens Valley reel from the devastation, the focus remains on rescuing the missing and rebuilding lives, with calls for long-term measures to mitigate future disasters.
