The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25, 2025, with member Archana Majumdar visiting the campus. The case, which has sparked protests and political debate, underscores ongoing concerns about campus safety and police accountability in West Bengal.

A Shocking Crime

The assault, reported in the college’s union room, involved three perpetrators—Manojit Mishra, an alumnus and ad-hoc employee, and students—who were arrested on June 26 and remanded to custody until July 1. The survivor’s medical report, confirming injuries, prompted the formation of a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Assistant Commissioner. CCTV footage and 90-second assault clips found on the accused’s phones are under scrutiny, but the NCW alleges delays in critical procedures like medico-legal examinations.

NCW’s Intervention and Police Pushback

Majumdar, speaking to media, criticized the police for not disclosing the survivor’s whereabouts and preventing her team from meeting the family in Champahati. She claimed the Deputy Commissioner was unaware of the survivor’s location, raising questions about transparency. NCW Chairperson's letters to Kolkata Police Commissioner and Chief Secretary spurred action, but Majumdar’s team faced resistance, including demands for additional permissions to survey the crime scene.

Political and Public Outcry

The incident has fueled protests, with West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar detained briefly on June 28 for demonstrating. State Minister criticized the NCW’s focus on Bengal, urging nationwide probes. The college administration, informed via media, has sealed two rooms for investigation.
