The government recently extended duty-free import of cotton by three months till December 31 to help textile exporters facing a hefty duty of 50 percent in the US. Earlier, on August 18, the Finance Ministry had allowed duty exemption on cotton imports from August 19 to September 30. This includes exemption from 5 percent basic customs duty (BCD) and 5 percent agricultural infrastructure and development cess (AIDC), as well as a 10 percent social welfare surcharge on both, resulting in a total import duty of 11 percent on cotton.
