Central Government Enforces GRAP Stage 3 Restrictions As Delhi’s Air Quality Worsens Critically

With Delhi’s air quality landing in the ‘very poor’ zone, the Central Government has initiated GRAP Stage 3 measures, tightening restrictions to combat hazardous pollution and protect public health.

New Delhi: The air quality in Delhi is rapidly worsening, crossing 400 at multiple locations and severely affecting residents. Authorities have activated GRAP Stage 3 to restrict pollution sources. Experts warn that stagnant winter air will trap toxic particles, increasing breathing problems for elderly and children. Government sources believe emergency steps were essential to avoid further deterioration, as the next six days may bring even harsher conditions if unchecked.

Will Partial Office Closure Control Pollution?

Under GRAP-3 guidelines, government and private offices may operate with only 50% staff present physically. The remaining employees will be allowed to work from home. This step aims to reduce traffic emissions, which are one of the major contributors to hazardous AQI levels. Officials say coordination among agencies is being fast-tracked to ensure compliance and lower vehicle congestion.

Are Vehicle Restrictions Enough To Curb Smog?

Entry of BS-III petrol and older vehicles has been banned in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar. Only BS-IV petrol cars are permitted, while diesel vehicles of this category are restricted. However, BS-VI petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles are allowed. Despite these curbs, experts say deeper control measures may be needed if conditions worsen.

Why Were Schools And Sports Events Halted?

The Delhi government has suspended all sporting events scheduled for November and December. Schools and colleges have also been advised to pause outdoor physical activity. Officials from CAQM directed this move after identifying immense health risks for children and young athletes exposed to prolonged outdoor pollution.

How Hard Is Pollution Impacting Public Health?

Every winter, pollution levels spike in Delhi-NCR due to low wind movement and burning activities. This year is no exception, as hospitals report rising respiratory distress cases. Residents complain of eye irritation, fatigue, and breathing issues. Doctors advise limited outdoor movement and immediate medical consultation for sensitive individuals.

Can GRAP Stage 3 Reverse The Crisis?

Authorities aim to reduce heavy traffic, construction activities, and outdoor gatherings under this stage. While implementation has begun, environmental analysts believe that unless strict compliance is ensured, Delhi may soon require GRAP-4, which includes total shutdown of non-essential activities.

When Will Relief From Pollution Arrive?

Experts predict that without rainfall or strong winds, pollution will stay at ‘severe’ levels for at least six more days. Residents are urged to use masks, avoid early morning walks, and rely on air purifiers if possible. Government agencies continue monitoring AQI hourly to decide further action if the situation escalates.
