New Delhi: The Delhi High Court held a crucial hearing on Thursday regarding social activist Sonam Wangchuk's indefinite hunger strike. The Central government assured the court that government doctors are constantly monitoring Wangchuk's health and that if any medical intervention is needed, the necessary steps will be taken immediately, based on the doctors' advice.

The matter came to light during the hearing of a petition seeking immediate medical attention in view of Wangchuk's deteriorating health condition.

What did the court say?

A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay and Justice Tejas Karia stated that the life of every citizen is of utmost value. The court directed the Central government to conduct daily medical examinations of Sonam Wangchuk and provide necessary treatment or intervention based on the doctors' reports.

"We would like this person to be regularly medically checked by government doctors and, depending on the report of the doctors, if any medication is required, please intervene. Every life is precious," the court stated.

What did the Central government say

During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Central government, informed the court that government doctors and experts are continuously monitoring Wangchuk's health. He stated that if the medical team recommends any treatment or other assistance, the government will immediately take necessary action. Expressing satisfaction with the Central government's stance, the High Court disposed of the petition.

"We appreciate the stand taken by the learned Solicitor General and direct that Wangchuk's medical condition be clinically monitored on a daily basis and whatever medical intervention is required shall be taken," the court said while disposing of the petition.

What was demanded in the petition?

This public interest litigation was filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini. The petition sought directions to the Central government and the Delhi government to ensure Sonam Wangchuk's safety and, if necessary, hospitalization and proper treatment. It also sought to provide him with essential nutrients, vitamins, and a liquid diet to maintain his health.

Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28. His primary demand is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. He alleged that various examination irregularities, including the NEET paper leak, require an impartial investigation and accountability.

According to Dr. Satish Lamba, a senior physician monitoring Wangchuk's health, he has lost approximately 500 grams in the past 24 hours. He has lost more than 9 kilograms since the hunger strike began. However, his blood pressure, blood sugar, and oxygen levels are currently being monitored by medical supervision.
