New Delhi: After the government's decision to ban households with connections of piped natural gas (PNG) from retaining domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), about 6,000 PNG users in the country have given up their LPG connections, a Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry official said on Sunday.

When did the consumers give up LPG connections?

A Ministry official on Sunday said that around 6,000 PNG consumers have given up their LPG connections.

"As many as 6,000 PNG consumers surrendered their LPG till yesterday. A big thanks to them! Join this strong bold group of DoGood citizens who have come forward to give up LPG to help those to get LPG who don't have PNG," Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary Neeraj Mittal said in a post on X.

He further urged other PNG users to give up their LPG connections, saying, "Give up yours today at http://MyPNGD.in."

What is the reason?

Due to the ongoing war in the Middle East, supplies to households and transport have been prioritised in the country's gas sector. PNG and CNG are receiving their full supply, while industrial and commercial customers are receiving approximately 80 per cent of their average consumption.

What about the fertilizer plant?

According to a government statement, fertilizer plants are being supplied at 70-75 per cent capacity and additional LNG cargoes are being arranged.

According to PTI report, the government has assured that it has taken steps to secure the supply of fuel and gas.

How many PNG connections were done?

The ministry said that more than 290,000 new PNG connections were added in March. The expansion of city gas distribution networks is being accelerated by simplifying approval processes and encouraging the transition from LPG to PNG.

What did the government say about LPG connection?

As the country struggle with the LPG shortage due the conflict in Middle East, the government on March 25 said that that cooking gas LPG supply to households will be discontinued if consumers fail to switch to piped natural gas where such connectivity is available.

What is the motive of this?

The directive aims at to increasing the speed of transitioning from cylinder to pipeline-based fuel, that will reduce the dependence on a single supply channel.

According to the order issued on March 24, the LPG supply "shall cease after three months" if a household does not opt for PNG despite availability.
