Japan: Strong earthquake tremors were felt in Shimane province of Japan on Tuesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially measured the earthquake's magnitude at 6.2 but later revised it to 6.2. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the eastern part of Shimane province. The agency clarified that there is no danger of a tsunami from this earthquake.

Why were different figures revealed regarding the intensity of the earthquake?

Japan's weather agency recorded the quake's magnitude at 6.2, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) put it at around 5.8-6.0. According to experts, such differences come due to different measuring methods. At present it is considered a medium-level earthquake.

How strong were the earthquake tremors felt on the ground?

According to local channel NHK, Shimane and Tottori prefectures recorded an intensity of upper 5 on Japan's seismic scale. In many areas people came out of their homes in fear. However, there is no news of any major damage or casualties so far.

Why did the horrific memories of 2011 become fresh?

Every earthquake in Japan is a reminder of the disaster of 2011, when a tsunami following a 9.0 magnitude marine earthquake caused massive destruction. About 18,500 people were killed or went missing in that accident. For this reason people do not take any shock lightly.

Why was the 'Mega Quake' warning issued?

In August 2024, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special warning for the country's southern Pacific coast. It was feared that a very powerful earthquake would occur in the Nankai Trough area. This area is a long trench under the sea, where tectonic plates are under constant pressure.

If a major earthquake occurs in the Nankai Trough, how serious will the impact be?

According to Japanese government estimates, if a major earthquake and subsequent tsunami occur in the Nankai Trough, about 298 thousand people may lose their lives. Also, the country may suffer an economic loss of up to $2 trillion.

Why do earthquakes occur frequently in Japan?

Japan is located in the 'Ring of Fire' region of the Pacific Ocean, where four major tectonic plates meet. For this reason, this country is counted among the most earthquake-affected areas of the world.

How many earthquakes are recorded in Japan every year?

On average, 1,500 earthquakes are recorded every year in Japan, which has a population of about 125 million. Most of these are small, but if the earthquake is shallow and occurs in a populated area, the risk of damage increases.
