China Hands Over Hangor Submarine to Pakistan, Escalating Naval Strength and Strategic Concerns in Region

China has delivered an advanced Hangor-class submarine to Pakistan, bolstering Islamabad’s naval strength and heightening strategic anxieties for India and other regional powers in the increasingly contested Indian Ocean.

International news: The strategic balance in South Asia took a sharp turn after China transferred another Hangor-class submarine to Pakistan’s navy. This advanced vessel is part of a larger defense agreement between the two allies, under which eight submarines will be delivered. Defense experts believe this move significantly enhances Pakistan’s undersea warfare capabilities, enabling it to project power in the Indian Ocean. For India, already concerned about China’s naval expansion, this development deepens security challenges and adds pressure on its maritime strategy.

The Hangor-class submarines are equipped with modern technology and powerful weapons. These new technology sensors, improved stealth, and the ability to stay underwater for a long time are built. Apart from this, this submarine includes tremendous firepower. On Thursday, the launch ceremony of the third submarine was held in Wuhan City, China, in which Pakistani naval officers participated.

China Boosts Pakistani Naval Power

China has been engaged in increasing Pakistan's naval power for the past few years. In addition to these eight submarines, China has also given Pakistan four modern warships. Along with the development of the Gwadar port, China is trying to strengthen its presence in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Experts believe that these steps can pose a challenge to India and other regional powers.

Large supply of military weapons

China is providing Pakistan not only with submarines but also with much other military equipment. According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), more than 81% of Pakistan's military hardware is supplied by China.

This includes a spy plane (Rizwan), over 600 VT-4 battle tanks, and 36 J-10CE fighter jets. In 2022, China delivered the first batch of J-10CE fighter jets to Pakistan, which have been used in tense situations with India.

Impact on the regional balance of power

Hangor-class submarines and other military equipment are taking Pakistan's naval and air power to new heights. These submarines are capable of facing any threat at sea due to their advanced technology. Although Pakistan says that these weapons are for peace and stability in the region, countries like India are seeing them as a threat to their security.
