New Delhi: The chances of Aadhaar card misuse will soon be over. There are reports that the government is going to change the design of the Aadhaar card to prevent theft of Aadhaar card details. Following the launch of the new Aadhaar app, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to make major changes to the Aadhaar card to prevent misuse.
According to reports, the updated Aadhaar card will only display the cardholder's photo and a QR code. This move is intended to prevent misuse of Aadhaar card photocopies, which contain sensitive personal information. It is reported that preparations for this major change have been underway since last year.
What are features of new Aadhaar App?
UIDAI recently launched the full version of its new Aadhaar app. This app provides cardholders with many services that previously required a visit to an Aadhaar center.
Users can now update their mobile number, address, and other details directly through the app. It also allows cardholders to lock and unlock their Aadhaar biometrics with a single click.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar confirmed in an online conference that new rules are being developed to prevent misuse of Aadhaar cards through photocopies.
Why is the change being proposed?
The Aadhaar card has become a vital document for Indian residents. It is required for almost every purpose, be it opening a bank account, purchasing a SIM card, buying land, taking out a loan, or availing government schemes.
Currently, cardholders submit photocopies of their Aadhaar cards for such services. These copies contain the Aadhaar number, name, address, date of birth, and other information that could be misused.
To address this concern, a proposal is being considered to include only the cardholder's photo and QR code on the physical Aadhaar card. This will allow the card to function as a photo identity card while protecting sensitive information.
What is verification process for secure access?
Under the proposed changes, scanning the QR code on the Aadhaar card will allow verification for services such as banking, SIM issuance, and government schemes. This system is expected to increase privacy and reduce the risk of misuse. Reports about this potential rule surfaced in December last year, although it has not yet been implemented.
The new Aadhaar app displays a QR code with the cardholder's photo upon login, while other personal details remain hidden. Cardholder information is not revealed without logging into the app.
