New Delhi: The meteorological department on Sunday brought some relief for people suffering from the scorching heat, but this relief will not come immediately. First there will be storm, lightning and strong winds and then it will rain. Alert is in force in 17 states and the next 12 hours may prove costly for many places.

How far has the monsoon reached now?

The south-west monsoon has gained good momentum this time. It has hit Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and large parts of the North-East. It is also expected to reach Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and rest of Maharashtra in the next two to five days.

In which states will we have to be most cautious?

UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Himachal, Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim, Maharashtra, Goa, Tripura, Manipur, Andaman-Nicobar, Puducherry and Ladakh – there is an alert of severe thunderstorm and rain in these seventeen states today. Winds can blow at a speed of 80 to 90 kilometers per hour. There is also a danger of lightning at many places.

What will happen in UP and Bihar today?

There will be rain with thunder and lightning in districts of Eastern UP like Varanasi, Prayagraj, Azamgarh, Mau, Ayodhya, Sonbhadra today. However, heat wave may also occur on June 9-10, after which rain will return again. Western UP will have to wait till June 11-12.

There is orange alert in 12 districts of Bihar including Patna, Gaya, Buxar, Rohtas, Nalanda. There are chances of heavy rain in Bhagalpur and Banka. Good rain is expected across Bihar on June 9-10.

Will the people of Delhi have to endure the heat some more?

There will be clouds in Delhi on Sunday and the temperature will be between 38 to 40. But this relief is temporary. The temperature will reach 41 degrees on June 8 and 42 degrees on June 9. This means that Delhiites waiting for rain will have to endure the heat for a few more days.

What is the advice of the Meteorological Department?

IMD has clearly said, 'Do not stand near trees or electric poles during the storm.' Farmers should take special care of their crops. And avoid leaving the house until the weather is clear. If the monsoon advances, we will get a complete respite from the heat – but the plains will have to wait for two-three more days.
