Shalimar Bagh Drive: 150 Illegal Structures Demolished After Supreme Court Refusal
Following Supreme Court orders, a major anti-encroachment drive began under tight security in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh to demolish roughly 150 structures for a road-widening project.
New Delhi: A large-scale anti-encroachment drive has begun in Delhi's Shalimar Bagh following the orders of the Supreme Court. Bulldozers are being run on around 150 illegal structures since 4 AM. Police & Paramilitary forces were deployed across the region, conisdering the situaton.
Massive demolition drive underway, but why?
The anti-encroachment operation began at 4:00 AM on Max Hospital Road. Large numbers of Delhi Police and paramilitary forces were deployed on Saturday night. Security forces were stationed early to maintain peace. Approximately 150 houses are scheduled to be torn down. These are multistorey and very old buildings.
Purpose of widening roads?
Once the demolition drive is complete, the road leading from the Outer Ring Road toward Azadpur Mandi will provide a direct link connecting Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar to Azadpur Mandi.
No relief from the court?
The 150 homeowners, whose properties fell in the way of the proposed road widening project, were previously served notices. These notices directed them to vacate their houses by May 30, 2026. Following this, the homeowners approached the Delhi High Court and subsequently moved the Supreme Court, but they failed to get any relief.
Prior notice was released to vacate the home?
According to the reports, road connecting Outer Rig Road with Azadpur Mandi and Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar. It'll lead to accomodate the traffic rush and transportation problems. So noticing the demand, local administraton have sent the notice to vacate the place already. Some people accepted the demand and vacated the place, but some belongings are also found there during the demolotion.
How many residents have vacated the home?
Supreme Court directed to vacate their home, by 30 May. Despite this all, some people had not vacated and not removed their belongings from home. After the designated grace period ended, the demolition drive was launched on the morning of May 31 amidst tight security.
