Punjab Government Approves Rs.150 Crore Hostels Scheme, Will Safe Housing Encourage More Women To Join The Workforce?

Punjab News: Many women move to cities for employment but face issues due to high rent and safety concerns. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said every woman deserves a secure living space. Where Will These Hostels Be Built?

Five hostels have been sanctioned in total. Three will be constructed in Mohali, one in Amritsar and one in Jalandhar. These cities attract female professionals due to IT, business and industrial opportunities. Each hostel will house around 150 to 200 residents. Overall, the scheme will directly support nearly 1,000 women. Selected sites provide strong transport links and job accessibility. Work is expected to commence shortly.

Which Facilities Have Been Planned?

Planned amenities include 24x7 security with CCTV, Wi-Fi and medical rooms. Gym, library and common study zones have also been included. Does Previous Experience Support This Initiative?

In 2019, two hostels opened in Patiala and Ludhiana with an investment of Rs.35 crore. Over 200 women benefitted from reduced accommodation cost. Many saved between 40 and 50 percent. Neha Sharma, a resident, said she pays Rs.3,500 instead of Rs.8,000 previously. Learning from feedback, the government has expanded planning. Experts say earlier results helped improve strategy.

Economists believe women contribute more effectively when free from basic worries like housing. Easier access to urban jobs may improve female participation. Professor Mandeep Kaur said such initiatives represent growth direction. A focused workforce helps state progress. The plan also aligns with inclusive development goals.
