Punjab Schools Get Strong Nutrition Push: Mann Government Expands Meals, Adds Fruit and Supports Women Workforce

Punjab government has improved the Mid-Day Meal Scheme with fruit, better food, UKG coverage and more work for women cooks, so that every child gets healthy food and learns better.

Many children in Punjab, especially in rural areas, come to school without proper food. When the child eats in school, the mind stays fresh and learning becomes easier. Teachers also say that attendance improves when good food is served. The government understood that hunger affects studies. So these improvements were not just about food, but about giving children a strong body and mind. This change helps families too, because one meal of the day becomes sure and safe for the child.

How UKG Kids Were Included?

Earlier, small children in UKG classes were not part of the mid-day meal. Now almost two lakh UKG children in government schools get cooked food every day. These children are at an age where body and brain grow fast. If they get proper nutrition now, their learning ability becomes stronger. Parents feel relieved knowing their little child gets at least one hot meal every day. This decision has given real comfort to families who struggle to provide enough food at home.

What Is New Fruit Provision?

The government started giving seasonal fruits once a week. First bananas were given. Then Kinnow and carrots were added depending on the season. Fruits give vitamins that help children fight sickness and stay energetic. Buying fruits from local farmers also supports Punjab’s farming families. So the scheme helps both the child and the farmer. Seasonal fruits are fresh, cheap and healthy, making it a smart move for both health and economy.

How Has The Menu Improved?

A new weekly menu has been prepared with help of nutrition experts. Foods like dal, rajma, rice, sabzi and roti are arranged in a balanced way to provide protein and minerals. Children like the taste and feel full for longer. When the stomach is full, the mind stays calm. Teachers say children are more active and listen better in class after eating. This shows good food directly supports better learning. The focus has shifted from only filling the stomach to building strength.

Is Breakfast Scheme Coming Soon?

The government is planning a separate breakfast scheme like the one in Tamil Nadu. Many children reach school without eating anything in the morning. A simple breakfast will help them concentrate in the first period. If this scheme starts, more women will also get work as cooks. It will complete the nutritional support for school children from morning to afternoon. This step will make Punjab one of the leading states in school nutrition care.

Who Are The Women Cooks?

Around 44,301 women work as mid-day meal cooks in Punjab. For many of them, this job is their main income and source of respect. They reach school early, cook carefully and treat children like their own. Children call them "School Maa" or "Aunty". Many of these women have served for 20 to 30 years. Their work builds bonds in villages. They are the heart of the school kitchen and the backbone of the entire scheme.

What Support Do They Need?

These women earn around ₹3,000 per month. The government has requested the Centre to increase this amount. They also need proper safety, insurance and better cooking facilities. If their support improves, the whole system becomes stronger. Their service shapes the future of lakhs of children. They deserve fair wages and dignity because they feed the next generation every single day. Their role must be respected not just in words, but in policy.
