Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann has initiated a landmark relief operation, distributing Rs.377 crore to over 30,000 flood-affected families to rebuild homes and restore livelihoods after recent devastation.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann launched one of Punjab’s largest-ever disaster relief initiatives by providing Rs. 377 crore to more than 30,000 families affected by severe floods. He stated that the emotional and financial suffering endured by the people is beyond expression. During visits to flood-hit regions, he personally heard their hardships. The government assured citizens that it would stand alongside them in every step of recovery. Mann emphasized complete commitment to supporting affected families. This action is being hailed statewide as a major humanitarian decision.
What Assistance Has Been Provided To Rebuild Homes?
Under the rehabilitation program, each family whose home was completely destroyed is receiving Rs. 1.20 lakh. Initial payments of Rs. 70,000 have already been released to qualifying families. The remaining amount will be issued in two further installments to ensure smooth construction. Out of nearly 30,000 damaged homes statewide, 8,056 are located in Gurdaspur district alone. Mann said the compensation aims to help families restart their lives with dignity. This structured support ensures sustainable reconstruction efforts. Citizens have welcomed the transparency and timely relief.
How Are Farmers Being Supported After Flood Damage?
Farmers impacted by floods are receiving Rs. 20,000 per acre as crop damage compensation. The Chief Minister stated this is the highest payout ever granted by any Indian state government. He reiterated Punjab’s dedication to protecting agricultural livelihoods. The relief measure acknowledges the contribution of farmers as national food providers. Officials confirmed that disbursement for crop loss had already commenced earlier. This has offered vital economic stability to rural communities. Agricultural bodies have praised the prompt response.
What Role Did Communities Play In Relief Efforts?
Mann thanked social and religious organizations, along with volunteers from Punjab and other states, for their selfless service. He said the spirit of unity and resilience shown during the crisis highlights Punjabi character. Volunteers worked tirelessly in rescue, supply and medical support. Mann called their contribution invaluable in reducing the impact of the disaster. He acknowledged that community participation accelerated recovery efforts. Leaders commended the collective strength displayed in challenging times. Punjab once again proved its ability to overcome adversity.
How Is Employment Assistance Being Delivered?
To further assist reconstruction efforts, the government brought damaged home rebuilding under MGNREGA. Each eligible family will receive 90 days of employment during the rebuilding process. Mann confirmed that this job support is separate from the Rs. 1.20 lakh grant. The initiative ensures both wages and structural recovery take place simultaneously. This measure reduces financial pressure on families and promotes self-reliance. It also enhances rural employment during the post-disaster phase. Officials expect significant improvement in rehabilitation outcomes.
What Was The Estimated Damage And National Contribution?
Officials estimated total flood-related losses in Punjab at nearly Rs. 13,500 crore. Despite this setback, the state contributed almost 150 lakh tonnes of rice to the national pool. Mann said this achievement reinforces Punjab's pivotal role as the nation’s primary food supplier. He reiterated that even in crisis, Punjab upheld its duty. Experts indicate this highlights robust agricultural resilience. National agriculture forums acknowledged Punjab’s dedication. Mann emphasised that such commitment deserved full central support.
What Appeal Has Been Made To The Central Government?
The Chief Minister demanded immediate release of the Rs. 1,600 crore relief package announced publicly by the central government. He stressed the urgency due to ongoing recovery requirements. Mann said Punjab has responded swiftly in adversity and expects equal support from the centre. State leaders believe timely assistance will accelerate reconstruction and reduce financial strain. The appeal reflects bipartisan expectation for cooperation in disaster management. Mann concluded that his government would continue working like a family to support affected citizens.
