Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project Brings Canal Water, Ending Decades of Drought in Balachaur Kandi

Punjab has witnessed a historic transformation as canal water has finally reached the drought-prone Kandi belt of Balachaur after decades of struggle. Under the leadership of Bhagwant Mann, the Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project is bringing new hope to thousands of farmers who had long depended on rainfall and declining groundwater for survival.

After years of waiting, farmers in Punjab’s semi-hilly Kandi region have finally started receiving canal water in their fields. For generations, agriculture in the region depended mainly on uncertain rainfall and rapidly depleting groundwater levels. Due to the rocky terrain and uneven land, tube wells failed to provide reliable irrigation, leaving large portions of farmland vulnerable to drought and crop damage.

Project Brings Major Relief to Farmers

The Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project, connected to the Bist Doab Canal system, is now transforming the agricultural landscape of Balachaur. The project has been designed to supply assured irrigation facilities to villages that remained deprived of canal water for nearly three decades. Farmers who once struggled with uncertainty are now witnessing a stable water supply reaching their lands.

11,500 Acres to Get Assured Irrigation

Located on the right bank of the canal in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, the project is expected to provide reliable irrigation to nearly 11,500 acres of agricultural land spread across 38 villages. Officials believe the scheme will significantly improve farming productivity and reduce dependency on groundwater.

Advanced Pipeline Network Developed

Keeping the difficult geographical conditions of the region in mind, engineers designed the project to lift water nearly 300 feet upward before distributing it through a 221-kilometre-long pipeline network. The closed pipeline system will prevent water leakage and wastage while ensuring efficient and controlled water distribution to farms across the Kandi belt.

Solar Energy to Cut Operational Costs

The Punjab government has also focused on sustainability while implementing the project. A 1300-kilowatt solar power plant has been installed to support the irrigation system, helping reduce operational costs and energy consumption. Officials say the project reflects a modern and long-term vision for water management in the state.

Irrigation Coverage Expands Significantly

The project is expected to create a major impact across the region. Canal irrigation coverage in Balachaur’s Kandi belt will increase from 28,205 acres in 72 villages to nearly 39,705 acres across 110 villages. Areas previously declared “dark zones” due to critically low groundwater levels are expected to benefit the most from this development.

Farmers Express Happiness and Relief

Local farmers have welcomed the project with great excitement. One farmer from Balachaur said that earlier they constantly waited for rainfall, and crop failures were common whenever rains were delayed. With canal water now reaching the fields, farmers feel more secure and confident about their future agricultural activities.

A New Chapter for Punjab’s Kandi Region

The Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project is being viewed as much more than a government initiative. It is being considered the beginning of a new era for Punjab’s Kandi belt — one that promises agricultural stability, economic growth, improved livelihoods, and a more secure future for thousands of farming families who struggled with water scarcity for decades.
