One Year Of UCC: Over 4.7 Lakh Marriages Registered In Uttarakhand
Within less than one year of UCC implementation in Uttarakhand, a total of 4,74,447 marriages have been registered, reflecting a sharp rise in compliance and accessibility.
Dehradun: As the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand will complete one year of its implementation on January 27, the state has registered 4.7 lakh marriages till Monday, which shows the evidence of impact on civil administration and public convenience.
What is the figure in the state?
Within less than one year of UCC implementation in the state, a total of 4,74,447 marriages have been registered, reflecting a sharp rise in compliance and accessibility.
During this period, 316 people have also obtained certificates for divorce through the online mode, while 68 people registered live-in relationships, and 2 obtained certificates for ending live-in relationships.

How was marriages registered earlier?
Before the implementation of UCC in Uttarakhand, marriages were registered under 'Uttarakhand Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2010', and the couple had to be present at the sub-registrar office on the scheduled date with two witnesses.
What is the process now?
But now after the implementation of UCC, the process can be easily completed online, as per officials.
According to officials, under the UCC, nearly 100 per cent of marriage registrations are now done online. The couple can apply for registration from anywhere by submitting their records and video statements.
Under UCC, although there is a 15-day time-limit for issuing a marriage registration certificate after the application is submitted. Registration certificates are being received within an average of five days after applying, as per officials.
Uttarakhand became the first state in the country post-independence to implement the law.
Till Monday, a total of 4,74,447 marriages have been registered under UCC. According to the officials, the average number of registrations per day is reaching around 1,400, while under the previous Act, the average marriage registrations per day was 67.

On Monday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, "We are confident that other states would follow our initiative. The transparent and simple manner in which UCC provisions were implemented in the past year have increased people's confidence in the process. The UCC has proved to be a model law in every respect."
